Sinema Statement on Proposed Colorado River Water Reductions

Apr 11, 2023

PHOENIX – Arizona senior Senator Kyrsten Sinema released the following statement on the Bureau of Reclamation’s draft Supplemental Environmental Impact Statement for Near-term Colorado River Operations which proposes reductions for Colorado River water deliveries:

“The Colorado River belongs to all seven Basin States, and we thrive or fail together. As the West continues to face historic drought, Arizona – or any other state – cannot bear the brunt of water shortages. The only real, lasting solution is a consensus agreement between all Basin States.

To continue fueling jobs and expanding opportunities for Arizonans, we must secure our water future, and I’m proud that our leadership on both the bipartisan infrastructure law and the Inflation Reduction Act provided the West with the funding needed to allow for a collaborative agreement – the Bureau of Reclamation should quickly utilize this funding. Management of the Colorado River demands real leadership – and most importantly – compromise so Arizona and the entire West can continue to grow and thrive for generations to come.”
