WASHINGTON – Arizona senior Senator Kyrsten Sinema spoke in a Senate Homeland Security Committee hearing about the risks and opportunities associated with artificial intelligence (AI) and the need to provide real transparency and accountability through responsible innovation.

“AI has the potential to revolutionize Arizonans’ lives in countless ways – both good and bad. As we continue to integrate AI into our society, we must ensure that this technology is developed and deployed in an ethical, transparent, and responsible manner that preserves our privacy, protects our national security, and provides real accountability,” said Sinema, a member of the Senate Homeland Security Committee.

Sinema questioned witnesses about generative AI – like ChatGPT and deepfakes – and emphasized the need to increase transparency and privacy by promoting new technologies, such as content authentication protocols and watermarking, that would allow Arizonans to distinguish between human-created content and AI-generated content. The Senator additionally expressed her commitment as Chair of the Government Operations Subcommittee to ensuring that the federal government serves as a role model for society when it comes to responsibly and ethically deploying AI. Sinema also noted how building AI that reflects our values and mitigates bias is essential to ensuring that the U.S. beats China in the race to develop effective and efficient AI tools.

Sinema recently joined the Senate Artificial Intelligence Caucus to address AI’s potential impacts on jobs, government operations, and Arizonans’ privacy and civil liberties, boost national security through responsible innovation, and help the United States remain globally competitive as AI continues to transform how Arizonans live.
