Senator is positioned to oversee implementation of her landmark Chips and Science law in new role as Space & Science Subcommittee Chair
WASHINGTON – Arizona senior Senator Kyrsten Sinema will continue to serve as Chair of the Subcommittee on Government Operations and Border Management and begin serving as Chair of the Subcommittee on Space and Science in the 118th Congress.
As Chair of the Subcommittee on Government Operations and Border Management – a subcommittee of the Homeland Security and Government Affairs Committee – Sinema will continue her leadership of bipartisan efforts to ensure smart and effective border security.
In her new role as Chair of the Subcommittee on Space and Science – a subcommittee of the Commerce, Science, and Transportation Committee – Sinema is positioned to build on her leadership that resulted in passage of the Chips and Science law, which she ensured included historic investment to increase Arizona manufacturing of semiconductors while advancing America’s space and science goals. The subcommittee also provides Senator Sinema opportunities to advance Arizona’s thriving aerospace and technology sectors.
“I’m excited to continue leading on the issues that matter most to Arizonans as Chair of the Border Management and Space and Science Subcommittees in this new Congress. Leading the Space and Science Subcommittee allows me to ensure the effective and efficient implementation of our bipartisan Chips and Science law – boosting Arizona’s economy, creating strong careers, and strengthening our national security. As Chair of the Border Management Subcommittee, I’ll always ensure Arizonans’ voices are heard in any and all solutions securing our border,” said Sinema.
Sinema will lead the Government Operations and Border Management Subcommittee alongside Republican Senator James Lankford (OK). Sinema and Lankford have partnered on multiple initiatives securing Arizona’s border and protecting Arizona families, including on the recent re-introduction of her bipartisan Combating Cartels on Social Media Act. At the beginning of 2023, Sinema led a bipartisan group of solutions-focused senators, including Lankford, to the Southwest border to see the security and humanitarian crisis firsthand and continue their focus on finding solutions.
Sinema will lead the Space and Science Subcommittee. Last year, Sinema ensured the bipartisan Chips and Science law included robust space and scientific provisions, which were jeopardized by Washington political games. Unwilling to let political grandstanding hinder bipartisan progress on a once-in-a-generation investment in American manufacturing, Sinema worked with Republican Senator Todd Young (Ind.) to bring colleagues together and find common ground. The Sinema-shaped Chips and Science law modernized the federal government’s approach to science, improves the National Science Foundation, grows the STEM workforce, and expands our country’s global leadership in innovation, research, and development – keeping the United States ahead of China and other global competitors in technological advancement. Sinema ensured the law reauthorized the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), incorporating provisions she drafted as a leader on the Aviation and Space subcommittee of the 116th Congress – directing NASA to fund key science research at Arizona universities, maintain the International Space Station, and send the first woman to the moon.
