Sinema Backs Bipartisan Bill Establishing a Space National Guard

Nov 2, 2022

WASHINGTON – Arizona senior Senator Kyrsten Sinema cosponsored bipartisan legislation establishing a Space National Guard – a reserve component of the U.S. Space Force that increases efficiency of troop mobilization and strengthens national defense.

“Establishing a Space National Guard for Arizona and states across the country strengthens our defense readiness and helps keep Arizona families safe and secure,” said Sinema, Chair of the Senate Aviation Subcommittee and Co-Chair of the Space Force Caucus.

The Sinema-backed Space National Guard Establishment Act realigns more than 1,000 servicemembers within the Air National Guard to establish a Space National Guard, which would serve as a separate reserve component of the U.S. Space Force for each of the 50 states. The Space National Guard would complete both local and national duties.

Currently, more than 1,000 members of the National Guard are supporting the space mission from within the Air National Guard. The Space National Guard Establishment Act realigns these servicemembers who are currently completing missions within the Air National Guard that would fall within the scope of the Space National Guard. Sinema’s bipartisan legislation increases troop mobilization efficiency and supports a balanced budget.
