Sinema underscored importance of protecting military families through the Family Caregiver Program
Disabled American Veterans also thanked Sinema for her Ensuring Survivor Benefits During COVID legislation
WASHINGTON – Arizona senior Senator Kyrsten Sinema spoke in a joint Congressional Veterans’ Affairs Committee hearing with the Disabled American Veterans (DAV) about her work ensuring Arizona veterans and their families receive the care and benefits they’ve earned.
“Caregivers help disabled veterans navigate day-to-day activities with a sense of independence and freedom. We’ll keep working across the aisle, and with the DAV, to help Arizona veterans and caregivers access critical benefits and resources they’ve earned,” said Sinema, a member of the Senate Veterans’ Affairs Committee.
Sinema questioned DAV National Commander Andrew Marshall and DAV officials about the much-needed support from the VA’s Family Caregiver Program. Sinema followed up by asking how the Veterans’ Affairs Committee and DAV can work together to protect families who rely on this program and have earned its benefits.
During the hearing, Sinema thanked DAV for its critical support of Sinema’s bipartisan Ensuring Survivor Benefits During COVID bill—legislation she introduced with Republican Senator Thom Tillis (N.C.) ensuring family members of veterans who passed away due to COVID-19 receive the survivor benefits they’ve earned. This bill has already passed in the Senate and is being considered by the House.
For years, Sinema has worked to hold the VA accountable to ensure Arizona veterans and their caregivers can access the benefits they’ve earned.
At the conclusion of Sinema’s remarks, House Veterans’ Affairs Committee Chairman Mark Takano (CA-41) thanked Sinema for her advocacy on behalf of Arizona’s veterans, and assured her the committee would soon debate legislation she ushered through the Senate.
