WASHINGTON – The U.S. Senate Homeland Security and Government Affairs Committee approved the Saving Money and Accelerating Reports Through (SMART) Leasing Act—bipartisan legislation backed by Arizona senior Senator Kyrsten Sinema that maximizes efficient use of government properties and saves Arizona taxpayers’ money.
“Our commonsense, bipartisan plan saves Arizona taxpayers’ money through smarter, more efficient use of federal properties across the country,” said Senator Sinema.
The SMART Leasing Act creates a pilot program that allows federal agencies the freedom to fully utilize their property as a potential to generate revenue that would fund maintenance, revitalization, and improvements. The Sinema-backed bipartisan legislation is modeled on NASA’s successful enhanced-use leasing program that generated a total of $12.2 million in revenue during Fiscal Years 2017 and 2018.
This pilot program could provide millions of dollars for federal agencies to reinvest in their facilities, at no cost to Arizona taxpayers. The SMART Leasing Act would help realize the full potential of the federal government’s assets and efficient use of American tax dollars.
