Senate Commerce Committee passed Sinema’s bipartisan bill protecting seniors from scams
Sinema-backed bills supporting Arizona tourism industry and improving maternal health also passed the Commerce Committee

WASHIINGTON –The Senate Commerce Committee cleared three bipartisan bills supported by Arizona senior Senator Kyrsten Sinema with overwhelming support. The committee passed Sinema’s bipartisan Protecting Seniors from Emergency Scams Act. The committee also passed the Sinema-backed Protecting Tourism in the United States Act and the Data Mapping to Save Moms’ Lives Act.

“Today’s bipartisan success in the Senate Commerce Committee advances our efforts protecting Arizona seniors from scams, supporting Arizona’s tourism industry, and improving maternal health outcomes across our state,” said Sinema.

Sinema introduced the bipartisan Protecting Seniors from Emergency Scams Act with Senators Jerry Moran (R-Kan.) and Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.). Their legislation protects Arizona seniors from scams by requiring the Federal Trade Commission to identify the amount and types of scams targeting Arizona senior citizens and make policy recommendations to prevent such scams, especially scams with implications for future national emergencies. The bill also requires the FTC to update its web portal with new information, searchable by region and scam type, on senior-targeted scams.

Sinema cosponsored the Protecting Tourism in the United States Act and the Data Mapping to Save Mom’s Lives Act. The bipartisan Protecting Tourism in the United States Act requires the Commerce Department to study the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on domestic and international travel and tourism and submit policy recommendations to support the tourism and travel industry. The bipartisan Data Mapping to Save Mom’s Lives Act requires the FCC to map areas in the United States that have both internet service gaps and high rates of poor maternal health outcomes, and requires the GAO to report the effectiveness of internet connectivity in reducing maternal morbidity rates and identify the proper agency ensuring better internet connectivity to reduce maternal morbidity rates.
