WASHINGTON – Arizona senior Senator Kyrsten Sinema requested the Government Accountability Office to review efforts by the Departments of Education and Homeland Security to assist Arizona school districts in securing themselves from cyber threats, emphasizing the importance of security as schools have transitioned to more online schooling during the COVID pandemic. Sinema additionally requested recommendations on how to improve federal cybersecurity support for school districts.
“Securing Arizona schools from cyber attacks protects both students and teachers during online learning, which has grown during the coronavirus pandemic,” said Sinema, a member of the Senate Homeland Security Committee.
The FBI has been issuing warnings of potential increased ransomware attacks during the pandemic. Arizona school districts have experienced ransomware attacks in the past, with the most recent in 2019 where the Flagstaff Unified School District was targeted.
