WASHINGTON – Arizona senior Senator Kyrsten Sinema led the state’s Congressional delegation in supporting the University of Arizona’s application for a grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to expand its collaboration with health providers statewide, including in rural and underserved areas.
“Funding UArizona’s Clinical and Translational Science program guarantees Arizona’s rural health providers will be equipped with the latest research and best practices to care for Arizonans during the coronavirus pandemic,” said Sinema.
Sinema advocates for the University of Arizona’s AZ Clinical and Translational Science (AZiCATS) program, which is a collaborative research initiative between the university and Banner Health. AZiCATS would use the funding to work with more community partners—like rural health clinics, country public health departments, tribal organizations—to translate medical research into best new practices for underserved populations. This funding is especially critical during the COVID-19 pandemic, which has exacerbated health challenges for underserved populations.
The NIH grant is designed to advance translational science and support health equity. In addition to getting more funding, the grant would make AZiCATS part of the NIH national Clinical and Translational Science consortium, giving them access to NIH research and resources.
