Increasing resources for the U.S. Postal Service will help small businesses, Arizona communities

WASHINGTON – Arizona senior Senator Kyrsten Sinema cosponsored a Senate resolution calling for increased funding and support for the United States Postal Service to protect mail service in Arizona communities.

“The Postal Service provides a critical lifeline that connects loved ones and delivers lifesaving prescription drugs and other resources during this pandemic. Congress must address the Postal Service’s financial challenges,” said Sinema.

Sinema is a longtime advocate of protecting postal service in Arizona. Sinema successfully urged Congressional leaders to include $10 billion for the USPS in the CARES Act. Sinema also introduced a bipartisan Public Service Recognition Week resolution honoring postal workers and other public servants by designating May 3rd-May 9th Public Service Recognition Week. Additionally, Sinema has communicated with Arizona USPS leaders during the coronavirus pandemic to ensure Arizona USPS employees can access personal protective equipment and that operations run smoothly.

In addition to her work advocating for the USPS during the ongoing public health crisis, Sinema has long championed Arizona communities’ local postal service. Sinema led an Arizona Congressional delegation letter last year to support and protect postal standards in Arizona and ensure the Cherrybell postal processing plant in Tucson was not closed or consolidated. At a recent Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee hearing, Sinema received commitments from two nominees to the Postal Service Board of Governors to look at updated data before considering any consolidation that would impact Cherrybell. Sinema is also working directly with the town of Carefree to improve their postal service and ensure residents can receive critical mail such as U.S. Census forms.

Sinema has also added a resources page to her website, www.sinema.senate.gov/corona, for Arizonans looking for the latest information on coronavirus.
