Sinema discusses the role federal employees play in helping Arizonans during the ongoing coronavirus pandemic

WASHINGTON – Arizona senior Senator Kyrsten Sinema led a Regulatory Affairs and Federal Management Subcommittee hearing today on the ideas to make the federal government more responsive to the needs of citizens and discussed the critical role public servants play in helping Arizona navigate the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

“Federal employees take care of our veterans, coordinate medical supplies for our towns and counties, and provide assistance to keep our small businesses afloat. Many federal employees, such as the men and women who work on our borders and our postal employees, have continued their essential work throughout the crisis, working every day to keep our families safe and connected,” said Sinema, Ranking Member of the Regulatory Affairs and Federal Management Subcommittee.

In addition to highlighting the important role public servants play, Sinema discussed a series of ideas to improve public service, the responsiveness of the federal government, and hiring practices within government agencies, including the Department of Veterans Affairs and the Department of Homeland Security. The focus of the hearing was the recent report by The National Commission on Military, National, and Public Service, which included a number of proposals to make the federal workforce more nimble and customer focused.

The Senate recently approved Sinema’s bipartisan resolution introduced with Republican James Lankford (Okla.), Chairman of the Regulatory Affairs and Federal Management Subcommittee, that honors Arizona’s public servants and their work to overcome COVID-19 by designating May 3rd – May 9th as Public Service Recognition Week. The bipartisan resolution commends public servants—including Arizona servicemembers and government employees—for their contributions to Arizona and the United States.
