WASHINGTON – Arizona senior Senator Kyrsten Sinema led the Arizona Congressional delegation in urging the President to grant a Major Disaster Declaration for Arizona. This Major Disaster Declaration would allow Arizona to access more public safety resources to combat the coronavirus outbreak in the state.
“A Major Disaster Declaration will provide Arizona more tools and resources to combat the coronavirus outbreak and reduce its spread in our state,” said Sinema.
As of Monday, March 23, Arizona reported 235 cases of COVID-19 and 2deaths attributed to the virus. By Wednesday, April 1, Arizona confirmed 1,413 COVID-19 cases and 29 deaths. The exponential growth poses a risk for the public health of all Arizonans. The delegation’s request for a Major Disaster Declaration allows Arizona to receive the needed response resources to reduce the risk of overwhelming the state’s hospitals and health care industry.
Last week, Sinema urged the White House to expedite coronavirus vaccines and treatments, as well as increase access to medical supplies, to save Arizona lives.
