Following Sinema’s Support, Flagstaff’s Rio de Flag Flood Control Project to Receive $52 Million for Completion

Feb 12, 2020

WASHINGTON – Following a request from Arizona senior Senator Kyrsten Sinema, the Army Corps of Engineers announced it would provide Flagstaff’s Rio de Flag flood control project $52 million, allowing the project to be completed.

“The announced funding for completion of the Rio de Flag flood control project will protect the community of Flagstaff from catastrophic floods, spur job growth, and encourage infrastructure development,” said Sinema.

“This news about funding for the Rio de Flag Flood Control Project is very exciting for the city of Flagstaff. This would not be possible without the direct support of Senator Sinema and a number of other project supporters. This funding will move a large portion of the city out of the flood zone, including one of Flagstaff’s most historic neighborhoods and help alleviate over a billion dollar threat to our community. We are grateful for the Senator’s interest in representing small Arizona communities such as Flagstaff,” said Flagstaff Mayor Coral Evans.

The Rio de Flag flood control project will mitigate potential flood damage caused by heavy rain or snowmelt that flows into the Rio de Flag. In January, Sinema wrote to the Army Corps of Engineers urging the group to include funding for the Rio de Flag project’s competition in its Fiscal Year 2020 budget.
