WASHINGTON – Arizona senior Senator Kyrsten Sinema and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) introduced the bipartisan Prison Accountability Act, which makes the Director of the Federal Bureau of Prisons a Senate-confirmed position, strengthening accountability and oversight to the federal prison system.
“Working across the aisle to strengthen accountability of the federal prison system protects Arizona’s corrections officers and Arizonans’ tax dollars,” said Sinema.
The Federal Bureau of Prisons oversees 122 facilities, supervises more than 39,000 employees, and is responsible for the welfare of more than 208,000 federal inmates. The Prison Accountability Act amends the federal criminal code and requires the Director of the Bureau of Prisons be appointed by the President and confirmed by the Senate. It also limits the Director to a single 10-year term.
