WASHINGTON – Arizona senior Senator Kyrsten Sinema spoke today at a Senate hearing, highlighting the need to strengthen cybersecurity on Arizonans’ connected devices. Sinema cited Arizona’s booming tech sector and underscored the need to ensure emerging technologies are secure.
“Arizonans are developing the technologies of the future. The United States must do a better job developing cybersecurity standards, educating users about the cyber risks and solutions for connected devices, and increasing transparency for consumers,” said Sinema, a member of the Senate Commerce Committee.
As of 2018, there were over seven billion connected devices globally, and studies estimate that number will balloon to 25 billion by 2021. Topics at today’s hearing included the United States’ lack of national security standards for the Internet of Things, which are more commonly known as connected devices.
In today’s hearing, Sinema cited Arizona’s leadership in developing connected devices, mentioning ASU researchers who are testing wearable devices for our troops to communicate with each other in combat. She also pressed witnesses on what steps can be taken now to minimize the cyber security risks of connected devices.
