During Senate hearing, Sinema called for real, lasting solutions to Arizona’s housing supply and affordability crisis
WASHINGTON – Arizona senior Senator Kyrsten Sinema highlighted Arizona’s housing supply and affordability crisis during a Senate Banking, Housing, and Urban Development Committee hearing. The Senator called for real, lasting solutions to help Arizonans struggling to find and afford homes.
“From Bullhead City to Clifton, and from Casa Grande to the Navajo Nation, Arizonans across our state are struggling to find housing they can afford, and service providers are struggling to handle an influx of Arizonans experiencing homelessness. We have real challenges that require real solutions, not more tired, partisan talking points,” said Sinema, a member of the Senate Banking, Housing, and Urban Development Committee.
Sinema highlighted the serious housing challenges in Arizona, underscoring how housing supply and homelessness are related to each other and how many Arizonans are forced to treat emergency shelters as a permanent housing solution given the lack of housing availability.
Arizona is 270,000 units short on housing. Sinema highlighted how increasing the supply of affordable housing is an important step to help Arizona families make ends meet and address homelessness in communities across the state.
In May, Sinema and fellow Arizona Senator Mark Kelly announced that over $6 million will be coming to Arizona through the Housing and Urban Development Department’s Housing Trust Fund (HTF) to strengthen affordable housing options for Arizonans with low income.
Policies, like Phoenix’s new casitas law, will increase the housing supply, help alleviate the housing affordability shortage, and provide safe homes for Arizonans.
