Sinema reintroduced the Protecting Firefighters from Adverse Substance Act
WASHINGTON – Arizona senior Senator Kyrsten Sinema cosponsored the bipartisan Protecting Firefighters from Adverse Substance Act, which protects firefighters, emergency response personnel, and communities from PFAS chemicals found in firefighting foams.
“Arizona firefighters put their lives on the line to keep our communities safe and secure, and we must protect them from dangerous chemicals they are exposed to every day,” said Sinema.
The Protecting Firefighters from Adverse Substance Act directs FEMA to develop educational resources to protect firefighters, emergency response personnel, and local communities from PFAS exposure. PFAS is a group of man-made chemicals, common in firefighting foams. Last week, the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee unanimously passed the Protecting Firefighters from Adverse Substance Act out of committee.
The Protecting Firefighters from Adverse Substance Act is supported by the International Association of Firefighters, the National Volunteer Fire Council, and the International Association of Fire Chiefs.
During April of last year, Sinema secured 7,500 masks and 7,500 acrylic shields for the Professional Firefighters of Arizona through the IRONMAN Foundation’s Operation IRONAID Face Masks in partnership with Framebridge.
