WASHINGTON – Arizona senior Senator Kyrsten Sinema secured compensation for Arizonans exposed to downwind radiation in the annual bipartisan National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA).

Sinema originally introduced the Downwinders Parity Act earlier this year to give compensation to Arizonans in Mohave County exposed to downwind radiation. Inspired by Sinema’s legislation, the NDAA included compensation to Arizonans exposed to downwind radiation in all parts of the state.

“Arizonans, especially in Mohave County, have long sought justice from the horrific exposure to downwind radiation. I’m honored to secure the overdue compensation these Arizonans deserve in the Senate-passed bill,” said Sinema.

Sinema’s Downwinders Parity Act originally fixed the Radiation Exposure Compensation Act by extending the area in which Arizonans are eligible for compensation – expanding eligibility to all Mohave County. The NDAA built on Sinema’s work and extended coverage to all Arizona downwinders, as well as post-1971 uranium miners and millworkers.
