Sinema-secured funding opportunity is awarded through the Emergency Food and Shelter Program

WASHINGTON – Arizona senior Senator Kyrsten Sinema announced a humanitarian assistance funding opportunity of $350 million through the Emergency Food and Shelter Program to help communities in Arizona and throughout the country better manage the influx of migrants and asylum seekers crossing the border.

Sinema personally secured the funding necessary for this investment in stronger border security and management in the annual bipartisan budget legislation.

“I’m thankful for the incredible work Arizona communities do to ensure Arizonans are safe and migrants are treated fairly and humanely. Today’s investment in humanitarian assistance will strengthen Arizona’s response to the border crisis and help keep our state secure,” said Sinema, Chair of the Border Management Subcommittee.

The funding opportunity will repay costs incurred by localities and non-governmental organizations that assist migrants and asylum seekers who are released from the Department of Homeland Security custody pending the outcome of their immigration court proceedings. In the last two years, Sinema has secured more than $1 billion to help local communities that are on the front lines of the ongoing migrant crisis, and has consistently called for continued funding. When Sinema became Chair of the Senate Border Management Subcommittee, her first hearing focused on the contributions and challenges experienced by non-governmental organizations operating at the border.
