WASHINGTON – Arizona Senators Kyrsten Sinema and Mark Kelly announced that Tucson International Airport will receive $18 million in critical runway upgrades improving safety and convenience for Arizonans. The funding comes in addition to the $31.7 million investment in Tucson International Airport from the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs law – landmark legislation led by Sinema and shaped by Kelly.
“Tucson International serves as an economic engine for Tucson and Southern Arizona. This funding, paired with the investments from our infrastructure law, will boost tourism, improve safety, fuel jobs, and expand economic opportunities for Arizonans,” said Senator Sinema, Chair of the Senate Aviation Safety, Operations, and Innovation Subcommittee, and co-author of the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs law.
“The investments coming to Tucson International Airport will create more good-paying jobs, strengthen our economy, and welcome more visitors from around the world to the best place to work, live, and raise a family,” said Senator Kelly.
The $18 million awarded to Tucson International Airport, funded through the Fiscal Year 2022 federal appropriations legislation, will make upgrades to reconfigure an existing runway.
Sinema and Kelly’s bipartisan Infrastructure Investment and Jobs law includes $25 billion in additional investments for aviation infrastructure. The bipartisan law provides $15 billion in priority projects at every airport in the United States, $5 billion in competitive grants for terminal development and other landslide projects, and $5 billion in grants for strengthening Air Traffic Control towers and infrastructure.
Arizona airports are expected to receive a total of at least $360 million in additional federal support over the next five years from the bipartisan infrastructure law.
