Sinema: Phoenix Sky Harbor Awarded Over $10 Million Grant

Sep 11, 2020

WASHINGTON – Arizona senior Senator Kyrsten Sinema announced that Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport will receive over $10.2 million in federal grant funding to support a reconstruction project of the existing Terminal 2 runway pavement.

“Today’s grant funding supports critical repairs for runways and aircraft ramps to improve safety and efficiency at Sky Harbor,” said Sinema.

The $10.2 million Federal Aviation Administration grant includes $2,562,328 in CARES Act funding—landmark bipartisan legislation that Sinema championed into law—which helped increase the federal share of the grant to 100%. These funds support the reconstruction of 65,000 square yards of the existing Terminal 2 East Apron pavement and the second reconstruction phase of 29,000 square yards of the center portion of the Terminal 2 Apron.

In late July, two of Sinema’s bills investing in Arizona’s airports and economic growth cleared the Senate’s Commerce Committee with broad bipartisan support. Sinema’s bipartisan Expedited Delivery of Airport Infrastructure Act and Airport Infrastructure Readiness Act of 2020 both head to the Senate floor for full consideration.

In April, Sinema helped secure over $220 million in federal funding for Arizona airports from the bipartisan CARES Act. These funds follow Sinema’s work to ensure massive investment in Arizona’s airports, which have been particularly impacted by the coronavirus pandemic.
