Sinema-backed legislation protects families’ access to assisted reproductive technology services including IVF
WASHINGTON – Arizona senior Senator Kyrsten Sinema cosponsored the Access to Family Building Act – legislation protecting women’s and families’ access to assisted reproductive technology services, including in vitro fertilization (IVF).
The bill’s introduction follows the recent Alabama Supreme Court ruling that caused at least three major clinics in Alabama to stop services to families, including IVF services, in fear of violating the ruling.
“A woman’s health care decisions should be between her, her family, and her doctor. Countless parents have used IVF to start and grow their families. We must protect IVF services and Arizona families’ abilities to make their own decisions about their futures,” said Sinema.
The Access to Family Building Act would amend federal law to prevent state and local laws restricting access to assisted reproductive technology, including IVF. Specifically, the bill ensures an individual’s right to access assisted reproductive technology, as well as protects health care providers’ right to provide and insurers’ right to cover assisted reproductive technology services.
The Access to Family Building Act is part of Sinema’s continuing work to protect Arizona women’s and families’ health care decisions. The Senator also cosponsored the Women’s Health Protection Act – legislation preventing the government from placing restrictions on women’s access to health care – and introduced the bipartisan Reproductive Freedom For All Act to protect Arizona women’s abilities to make their own health care decisions.
