WASHINGTON – Arizona senior Senator Kyrsten Sinema released a statement following a senators-only classified briefing on the war in Ukraine.
“Arizona and America stand with Ukraine. Congress must ensure Ukraine has the tools and resources necessary to defend itself against Russia’s illegal and unprovoked war. Supporting Ukraine win this war and providing proper oversight of our aid will strengthen America’s long-term security, stability, and freedom – values Americans defend and hold dearly.”
In February, Sinema – along with U.S. Senators John Kennedy (R-La.), Kevin Cramer (R-N.D.), and Cindy Hyde-Smith (R-Miss.) – introduced legislation to establish a Special Inspector General for Ukraine who would oversee the use and spending of humanitarian, economic, and security assistance funding approved by Congress. Sinema and Kennedy published an op-ed about ensuring federal funds to Ukraine arrive where needed most.
Sinema has consistently backed legislation supporting Ukraine. Recently, Sinema increased aid to Ukraine, as well as joining a bipartisan letter supporting Sweden and Finland’s NATO membership bids.
Last year, Sinema applauded the Senate’s broad bipartisan vote ratifying Sweden’s and Finland’s membership into NATO. The Senator supported both countries’ NATO membership bids and urged the Biden Administration to support an expedient approval of these two bids.
Russia sanctioned 25 Americans – including Sinema – in response to her strong support for America’s sanctions against Russia for its illegal and unprovoked attacks against Ukraine.
