Sinema, White Mountain Apache Chairwoman Discuss Completion of Tribe’s Water System and Miner Flat Dam Project

Mar 22, 2022

WASHINGTON – Arizona senior Senator Kyrsten Sinema met with White Mountain Apache Chairwoman Gwendena Lee-Gatewood to discuss the White Mountain Apache Rural Water System and Miner Flat Dam Project and Sinema’s bipartisan infrastructure law, which fully funds all existing Indian Water Rights Settlements.

“I’m proud our bipartisan infrastructure law fully funds White Mountain Apache Tribe’s Water Rights Settlement, and I will continue partnering with Chairwoman Lee-Gatewood to ensure the White Mountain Apache Rural Water System and Miner Flat Dam Project is completed,” said Sinema, co-author and negotiator of the bipartisan Infrastructure Investment and Jobs law.

Sinema and Chairwoman Lee-Gatewood discussed legislation, which Sinema cosponsors, to extend Congress’ deadline to complete the White Mountain Apache Rural Water System and Miner Flat Dam Project – the Tribe’s water rights settlement enacted by Congress in 2010. Due to unforeseen technical delays and cost-overruns in planning and design of the Tribes’ water project, an extension of the deadline set by Congress for constructing the project is needed. This water project would provide clean, reliable drinking water for Tribal members on the Fort Apache Indian Reservation, including Whiteriver, Fort Apache, Canyon Day, Cedar Creek, Carrizo, and Cibecue.

Sinema’s bipartisan Infrastructure Investment and Jobs law fully funds all currently-authorized Indian Water Rights Settlements – including funding the White Mountain Apache Tribe’s Water Rights Settlement.
