Sinema’s Bipartisan Bill Guarantees Arizona Veterans’ Military Retirement Benefits

Senator’s legislation provides full retirement benefits for military retirees who also have a service-related disability

WASHINGTON – Arizona senior Senator Kyrsten Sinema cosponsored the Retired Pay Restoration Act—bipartisan legislation that guarantees retirement pay and disability benefits for Arizona military retirees.

“Our bipartisan plan fixes regulations unfairly preventing Arizona veterans from receiving the full benefits they’ve earned,” said Sinema, a member of the Senate Veterans’ Affairs Committee.

Current law restricts many military retirees’ full benefits if those individuals also draw VA disability compensation. Sinema’s Retired Pay Restoration Act ends the dollar-for-dollar offset of military retirement pay based on the amount of VA disability compensation a military retiree receives.

Sinema recently cosponsored the Major Richard Star Act—bipartisan legislation that ensures combat-injured Arizona veterans receive their full military benefits, including both disability compensation and retired pay.

In March, Sinema partnered with the VA, Philips North America, and the American Legion to secure the launch of Project ATLAS—a first-of-its-kind telehealth care program—for Arizona veterans in Wickenburg that connects veterans living in rural Arizona with the VA.
